Many teachers and parents alike are actively involved in literacy initiatives throughout the state of Maine and New England. Their goals are a long commitment to exercise and instill in our children high quality reading and language arts. The efforts of people like this go a long way to ensure that our children have the necessary literary skills and education to carry them through their lifetime.

Associations like the Maine reading Association put on workshops for teachers who are looking to improve teaching skills in the classroom. The Maine reading Association meetings are free to members that are in good standing, while average cost to attend for anyone else is usually $15. The upfront fee will usually cover one’s membership in Maine’s reading Association. A typical meeting can consist of watching a short video on teacher study groups that often times feature a literacy specialists. At times everyone who attends may receive a copy of literature that can help parents and teachers become better literacy leaders.

Teachers are encouraged to attend any Maine reading Association meetings because of the rare opportunities to hear from literacy experts such as Janet Allen, who is an international consultant in the field of literacy that is recognized for her comprehensive work and reading education.

Our children’s future is our responsibility. It is important as leaders, teachers and parents that we take the leadership role to help our children not only learn, but see the importance of reading and comprehension. Learning does not have to be dull or boring, it can be fun and exciting as well as entertaining for children of all ages. Do your part to support the Maine reading Association. When at all possible make a conscious effort to attend meetings and learn what you can do to share in the task of teaching our children.

All too often our children prefer the company of a video game or television to the company of a good book. As a parent do you feel that maybe your child is lacking some reading skills? It is not only our public school systems are responsible for giving our children the necessary education that they need to thrive as adults, it is also our responsibility as adults and parents. Not only is reading important, but understanding what one is reading and really, but it is also important to be able to grasp the full concept of the author’s thoughts and ideas.

Children and teenagers who enjoy reading, in general, have been known to have higher IQ’s, are more creative, do better in school and college therefore leading to a more successful career. Children who start reading from an early age will generally develop better language skills and they will be able to grasp the variances in phonics quicker, easier and better. The What are some reading workshops or lessons that you as a parent can and still have your children while they’re young?

Lessons vocabulary in context sentences:

Vocabulary in context sentences allows children and students to master commonly confused and misused words. Some of these misused terms or words are as follows: accept or except and precede and proceed. A lesson in vocabulary context sentences is generally designed for a child is reading at a great level of 4 to 6 grade. However advanced classes or lessons can be presented to students who are reading at grade level 7 to 9 as well.

Reading for understanding:

What exactly is reading or understanding? Reading for understanding helps a student or child to master specific reading skills such as finding the main idea of a passage, factual recall, vocabulary, inference, sequence and being able to draw conclusions. These are skills that are many times overlooked, or only briefly touched upon in our public school systems. Reading for understanding the lessons are designed for children or students who can read at grade levels 5 to 8. Advanced classes are designed for older children who can read from grade levels 8 to 11.

Reading strategy:

If your child or student is showing the ability to comprehend what they are reading and need help to develop an ability to make inferences, then a reading strategy lesson or workshop will be of great benefit. Basic classes are designed for a student who has a reading grade level of 5 to 8, while more advanced classes are designed for students who are able to read at grade levels 8 to 11.

Giving kids an early start with their education will jump start them into a career minded focus in life. One such career choice that we like here at maine reading is that of a veterinary assistant. Children usually have a strong bond with animals from an early age and its a great career choice to mention while young. It is exciting, fun and allows children to focus on helping animals instead of thinking about work. You may be wondering what it takes to become a veterinarian technician.

First of all, you must have a special love for animals of all sorts, no matter what kind or the size because just like humans, animals get sick and need medical treatment at one time or another in their life. You must also be able to interact well with animals and be able to comfort frightened or injured pets, no matter whether it is a family pet or some stray brought in off the streets. So technically, you will be filling a role similar to that of a medical nurse.

Veterinary Technician Schooling

As a veterinary tech all states require you to pass a credentialing exam following your coursework. An associate’s degree is the most popular training route for veterinary technicians which is a two-year program and covers courses in veterinary technology, animal anatomy and physiology, animal parasitology and veterinary office management.
You should also have an aptitude for math, biology, general science and demonstrate basic language and communication skills. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredits veterinary technology programs in the U.S. and Canada and most of these programs lead to an Associate degree after two years and some can even lead to a four-year Baccalaureate degree. Techs with the Baccalaureate degrees usually get higher salaries and greater levels of job responsibilities.

There is also a hands on training period called a preceptorship, practicum, or externship that is required of all students and is a critical component of the veterinary tech program. There is another option open and available for those students wanting to earn a degree in veterinary technology from home. This is referred to as distance learning and the AVMA accredits several distance-learnng courses that meet the same standards of accreditation as traditional programs and include a clinical component. This training is done through a sponsorship by a licensed veterinarian.

Veterinary Technician Job Description

All veterinary technician must work under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. Some of their everyday job duties include obtaining and recording patient case histories, collecting specimens and performing lab procedures, preparing animals, instruments and equipment for surgery, assisting in diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures, performing dental prophylaxes and assisting in research projects – this is just to mention a few as there are many other responsibilities to be had. Even though as a veterinary technician you are able to assist in performing a wide variety of tasks, they cannot diagnose, prescribe, perform surgery or engage in any activity prohibited by a state’s veterinary practice act.

Veterinary Technician Job Salary

Of course just like any other job, your salary will vary according to experience, responsibility, geographic location and employment type. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2007 the hourly wages were $13.90 for those who chose to work in veterinary offices. Those working in the federal government earned the highest salaries, at $43,380 and those technicians working for pharmaceutical and medicine manufaturing earned $42,240. The average veterinary technician salary can go up or down depending on so many variables as mentioned above. Schooling is very important and needed if on expects to make a good living as a vet tech.

If you are instilling education early in your childs life, consider pointing them in a direction that will keep their interest and make logical sense to them, even as young children. A career as a vet tech will offer a great stable career with many opportunity for growth.
